Assoc.Prof.MD Azizul Moqsud’s Laboratory Hosts “Summer Vacation Junior Science Class”

On July 31, 2026, the Summer Vacation Junior Science Class was held at the laboratory of Associate Professor Mohamed Azizul Moqsud (Field of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Graduate School of Sciences and Technology for Innovation). At the Moqsud Laboratory, an event titled “Let’s Make Electricity with Plants! The Secret of Microbial Fuel Cells!” was held with the primary objective of providing children with a hands-on experience in sustainable technology and environmental biotechnology.

The seven elementary and junior high school students who participated built their own Plant Microbial Fuel Cells (PMFCs)—an innovative technology that generates clean electricity from the natural interaction between plant roots and soil microbes.

After assembling their individual PMFC units from scratch , the participants.
Used multimeters, to measure the live voltage actually generated from their own plant systems.
Next, to demonstrate a practical application of this bio-energy, the generated electricity was used to play music. he melody was exceptionally well received by the participants and their parents.

Beyond the PMFC workshop, participants and parents were introduced to other cutting-edge research projects currently underway at the Moqsud Laboratory
They learned about technology that utilizes microorganisms to bind soil and create sustainable, eco-friendly construction materials (biocementation), as well as methods to decompose microplastic pollutants using biological processes to purify the environment (microplastics bioremediation).

By bridging complex environmental science with fun, tangible experiments, the program successfully sparked curiosity about green energy and environmental protection among the next generation of scientists.

“It was amazing to see the children’s eyes light up when they realized that electricity generated with the help of trees could actually power sound,” noted the lab team.

Our university will continue to promote activities that support the development of human resources who will drive the future of science and technology.
